Wiring a New House: A Step-by-Step Guide for Rawat

Step 1: Load planning before anything is priced

Before we quote anything, we work out what the house actually needs — lighting, general sockets, kitchen appliances, air conditioning, and any backup power like a generator or UPS. This isn't guesswork based on square footage; it's a room-by-room calculation that determines how many circuits you need and how the distribution board should be sized.

Step 2: Circuit design and distribution board sizing

Once finishing work — plaster, paint, flooring — is done, we return to install switches, sockets, the distribution board's final components, and connect light fixtures, fans, and appliances to their circuits.

Step 7: Testing and handover

Every circuit is individually load-tested, not just checked for continuity, before we consider the job finished. This includes:

  • Breaker response testing — confirming each circuit trips correctly under a fault condition.
  • Earthing verification, confirming the earth connection is effective, not just present.
  • Two-way and multi-way switching checks, where staircases or hallways use them.
  • Changeover testing, if generator, UPS, or solar provision was included.

You'll get a simple circuit map at handover — useful reference for any future work, whether that's your own or a different contractor's years down the line.

Questions to ask before wiring starts

A short conversation before Step 1 begins tends to save time later. Worth clarifying with your electrician up front:

  • Is the load calculation based on your actual planned appliances, or a generic estimate for a house of this size?
  • How many spare ways will the distribution board have for anything added after move-in?
  • Is backup power provision — generator, UPS, or solar — included now, even if the equipment itself is being bought later?
  • Will every circuit be individually load-tested, or just checked for basic continuity?

When should I bring an electrician into a new build?

As early as possible — ideally once the structural layout is confirmed, before plastering starts. Bringing an electrician in after walls are finished usually means surface-mounted wiring or costly rework.
